Handicap adjustments

Your playing handicap band is taken before each round. The new exact handicap is rounded to one decimal place.

Automatic after every score

The tracker applies the handbook table in round order and keeps handicaps between 0 and 36.

Season format

How the society works

Each game is Stroke Play with Stableford scoring.
Members must play with at least one other society member.
All players play seven rounds. The highest accumulated total wins.
Rounds must be played in order and before the next society date. A missed round becomes null and void.
New members can appear on the leaderboard but cannot win a competition in their first season. They become eligible from the following season.

Scoring and scorecards

Submitting a valid score

Another member must mark your score; you cannot record your own score.
Write the player’s handicap in the relevant box, including the decimal place.
The player and marker must sign the card at the end of the round.
Photograph every scorecard and send it to Steve Towsey for the leaderboard.
Before playing, complete the round, date, time, player and handicap details.
Use Player A for strokes, Points for Stableford points, Handicap for the exact handicap and Strokes Received for the playing handicap.

Ties and season totals

Countback rules

The highest total Stableford score wins the Individual Abbey Society Trophy.
If players tie, use the highest single Stableford scorecard first.
Further countback is fewest blobs, then fewest one-point holes, then fewest two-point holes.
If all players agree, a play-off may decide the winner. If still tied, count back from the 18th hole.

Major competitions

Major and round rules

You must play on the day of a Major to be in contention for that Major Trophy.
If you cannot attend a Major, you may still play the round later and it will count towards the main season total.
If you cannot make a weekend, you may play any time with another society member.
All rounds must be completed before the next round and by the final society round on 13 September. No exceptions.

Ryder Cup

Team event rules

The Ryder Cup takes place over the last two rounds and does not count towards the main season scoring.
It is optional. If you commit and cancel at the last minute, a refund may not be possible.
Two captains represent Europe and the United States of America, with a draw allocating the remaining members.
The captain decides the playing order. The formats are Texas Pairs, Match Play Pairs and Match Play Singles.

Rules of golf

Essential play rules

Read the local rules, clearly mark your ball and carry no more than 14 clubs.
Do not give or receive advice except from your partner in a team format or your caddie. Practice strokes are not allowed during a hole, except on the putting green after completing it.
Play promptly. Slow play penalties in stroke play are one stroke for a first offence, two for a second and disqualification thereafter.
Play from the teeing area. Playing from outside it carries the applicable stroke-play or match-play penalty.
Do not improve your lie, stance or line of play. Playing the wrong ball costs loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play.
On the putting green you may repair damage and mark, lift, clean and replace your ball on the exact spot. The flagstick may be left in or removed.
If you accidentally move your ball while searching, replace it without penalty. Apply the relevant penalty if it is moved elsewhere during a practice swing.
If your ball is deflected or stopped by you, your partner or your equipment, play it as it lies without penalty.
Loose impediments may be removed, and free relief is available from ground under repair, temporary water and animal holes, subject to the rules.
For a penalty area, options include playing it as it lies, taking back-on-the-line relief, replaying the previous shot, or using the red-stakes lateral option.
A ball is lost if not found within three minutes. If it may be lost or out of bounds, play a provisional before moving forward.
Under the optional local pace-of-play rule, a lost or out-of-bounds ball without a provisional may be dropped in the fairway with two penalty strokes, only where permitted and agreed.
An unplayable ball may be dropped within two club-lengths, back on a straight line or played again from the original spot for one penalty stroke.

These are the society’s handbook rules and essential reminders. For the complete and latest official rules, refer to the R&A Rules of Golf guide.
